India could see its next major wave of infrastructure investment focused on artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and quantum computing, according to comments made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at an IIT Madras Alumni Association event in Bengaluru.
Sitharaman highlighted the need for greater investment not only in AI applications but also in the underlying hardware, computing infrastructure, skills and institutions needed to support wider adoption. She said India needs to strengthen its existing digital infrastructure and build additional capacity for AI deployment across sectors.
The Finance Minister also highlighted the importance of making AI solutions accessible to micro, small and medium enterprises. According to her comments, businesses will require both technology and skilled trainers capable of helping organizations use AI to improve productivity and competitiveness.
Semiconductor capabilities are another part of the broader technology infrastructure picture. As demand for computing power increases, semiconductor manufacturing, AI hardware and supporting digital infrastructure are becoming increasingly connected.
The focus on quantum technology adds another dimension to India’s longer-term technology ambitions. Together, AI, advanced computing hardware and quantum technologies could influence investment priorities across India’s technology ecosystem.
