India’s TakeMe2Space Plans Orbital Computing Satellite Launch

TakeMe2Space

Indian space technology startup TakeMe2Space is preparing to launch what it describes as India’s first orbital computing satellite, with its MOI-1A spacecraft scheduled to fly aboard a SpaceX rocket on October 1. The satellite is planned to operate as an edge-computing platform in low Earth orbit, processing data in space rather than sending large amounts of raw data back to Earth.

The sub-50-kilogram spacecraft will carry Nvidia Orin NX processors designed for edge computing. TakeMe2Space says customers will be able to upload containerized AI models to the satellite, allowing those models to analyse data as the spacecraft passes over specified areas. Instead of transmitting the complete underlying datasets, the satellite can send the resulting analysis back to Earth.

TakeMe2Space said it has already signed 23 customers for the mission, including geographic information system companies and educational institutions. Commercial applications are expected to include agriculture, mining, supply-chain management and insurance. US-based space-data analytics company Little Place Labs is among the customers.

The company says this approach could reduce the amount of raw data that needs to be transmitted from orbit. Its longer-term plans include larger and networked satellites designed to increase computing capacity and support multiple customers.

The MOI-1A mission follows TakeMe2Space’s earlier technology-demonstration mission, MOI-TD, which launched in December 2024. The company says that mission conducted more than 20 experiments in orbit, including AI-related processing. A subsequent MOI-1 spacecraft was lost following a launch-vehicle third-stage failure.

TakeMe2Space also plans to develop larger satellites beginning in 2027, with the goal of increasing orbital computing capacity and reducing costs. The company has additionally outlined plans to explore orbital cold storage for critical data, including potential applications for financial-services and defence organizations.

The planned mission represents an emerging approach to cloud and AI infrastructure: moving some computing closer to where data is generated, even when that data originates in space.
