Businesses are entering 2026 with a cybersecurity environment that is changing quickly. Artificial intelligence is helping organizations improve security operations, but it is also giving attackers new capabilities. The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 identifies AI as one of the biggest drivers of change in cybersecurity.
One major shift is the growing importance of AI-related vulnerabilities. In the World Economic Forum survey, 87% of respondents identified AI-related vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing cyber risk during 2025. At the same time, organizations assessing the security of AI tools increased from 37% in 2025 to 64% in 2026.
Cyber threats are also increasingly targeting the software and infrastructure businesses already depend on. Google Cloud reported that, during the second half of 2025, software vulnerabilities accounted for 44.5% of observed initial-access incidents in its cloud customer environments, compared with 27.2% involving weak credentials.
This makes cybersecurity a business issue rather than simply a technical one. A security incident can interrupt operations, expose sensitive information, affect customers and create financial or regulatory consequences.
For businesses, the focus is therefore shifting toward continuous protection and preparedness. This includes keeping software updated, strengthening identity and access controls, monitoring unusual activity, protecting cloud environments, maintaining reliable logs and preparing clear incident-response processes.
Cybersecurity also needs to evolve alongside business technology. As organizations adopt AI, cloud services and connected digital systems, security measures need to be considered as part of the technology strategy from the beginning.
The objective is not simply to prevent every possible attack. It is to build an environment that can reduce exposure, detect threats quickly and recover effectively when incidents occur.
